Celebration of Life for Ken Ryall

PQRTA member, Ken Ryall, passed away, suddenly, in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on Sunday, November 23, 2014. Ken was a long-time musician in the Nanaimo area. He played in small and large groups, since coming to Nanaimo, in 1963. His favourite instrument was the clarinet but he also played the saxophone. Ken was a music teacher in Parksville/Qualicum School District for many years, where he taught band and elementary music from K-7.

Ken  was a member of the K-40 club and Elks Lodge.

Ken was born in Duncan and lived in Victoria and Nelson before coming to Nanaimo. He will be deeply missed by his wife Glenda, daughter Christine Calvin, and his grandchildren Brian and Catherine Calvin, as well as his brother Alan in Toronto.

A celebration of Ken's life will be held at the Costin Hall in Lantzville on January 17, 2015 from 2pm-5pm. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

News on the Strike

Greetings, Colleagues in Retirement:

Some PQRTA members have asked if the BCRTA has any news on the teachers' strike, to augment what is being reported in the media.

BCRTA President, Cliff Boldt, has sent the following note addressing this issue:

I have created a special file on the www.bcrta.ca web site for information about the current job action.

                Cliff :)

May you enjoy fun in the Saturday sun!

Help Stock the Food Cupboards of Striking Teachers, on Thursday, September 11th

Greetings, Colleagues in Retirement:
PQRTA President, Kay Howard, received the note, below, from the Mount Arrowsmith Teachers’ Association, suggesting another way that we retired teachers can help make things a bit easier for our active colleagues, as they continue their struggle for a fair contract and better working and learning conditions.

NOTE:  The MATA Office is located at #105-191 Jensen Avenue (corner of Weld Street and Jensen; the office entry is actually off Weld Street) in Parksville..
As well, dropping by the picket line to “walk the walk” and/or dropping off some cookies, muffins, hot coffee, etc. to keep the spirits of those on the picket line is much appreciated, too.
May you have much joy on these warm September days!

Good morning,

This is a reminder that any baked goods, preserves and produce can be dropped off at the MATA office before Thursday, September 11th. The plan is for members to be able to pick up some items on the Thursday afternoon after 1pm. You can also bring in non-perishable items. Bear in mind that we do not have a  fridge or freezer at the MATA office. If you can keep the items, possibly closer to the Thursday date, that would be appreciated.

Thanks for thinking of our colleagues in need!

Support for Striking Teachers

Hello Retired Teachers!

At our recent "To Hell With the Bell" Breakfast on September 2nd, we decided to use the accumulated Q points on the PQRTA Quality Foods account to support our local striking teachers.

On behalf of PQRTA, our president (Kay Howard) and our Vice-President (Tom Manson), delivered 35 frozen turkeys to a meeting of MATA (Mt. Arrowsmith Teacher's Association) who were very appreciative.

Do you have some extra Q points to help our local striking teachers???

188,000 Q points = one frozen turkey (5 to 7 kilograms of $35 to $40 value)
376,000 Q points = two frozen turkeys
564,000 Q points = three frozen turkeys
752,000 Q points = four frozen turkeys
940,000 Q points = five frozen turkeys

Please contact Kay Howard to make arrangements for pick up and delivery of frozen turkeys to needy teachers.

Email:  khoward@shaw.ca
Phone: 250.752.5567

Alternately, you can get QF gift cards or boxed chicken, at the following rates:

250,000 points plus pay $29.99 = $50 QF gift certificate
250,000 points plus pay $9.99 = box of frozen chicken (2 and 1/2 kilograms)

Thank you!  Cathy Van

Here's Kay's note:

STRIKE SUPPORT – September 2014
I promised an update at our recent meeting.  This is to let you know that Tom and I delivered 35 frozen turkeys to striking MATA members at a meeting today, on behalf of the PQRTA.  They were all very appreciative of our support.  If any PQRTA member would like to buy more frozen turkeys with their accumulated Q points (188,000 points per 5 to 7 kilogram turkey), please let me know and I will arrange to pick them up and have them delivered to those that need them most.

PQRTA Policies and Procedures:
3.1.1: Notification of Attendance:
PQRTA members must contact the Programme Chairpersons no later than one (1) week before a PQRTA meeting to advise that they would like to attend and/or bring a guest to the meeting.
3.1.2 Member's Liability to Pay for an Event:
a) Once having indicated his or her intention to attend a PQRTA event, a member becomes liable to pay the announced cost of participation in that event, whether or not he or she actually attends. d)  If at least two out of the President, Vice-President and Treasurer agree that circumstances warrant (such as bereavement or sudden medical emergency), a debt may be waived on compassionate grounds.

Volunteers Required for new Committee

Parksville Qualicum Retired Teachers
In view of the pending closure of 4 Elementary Schools in school district 69 a special committee is necessary to assist in the preservation of educational heritage items from these facilities.
Our School Board is being approached: to create a policy for educational heritage preservation (as recommended by Margaret Sutton, British Columbia Retired Teachers’ Heritage Committee), and  to  possibly provide a vacant room at one of the remaining open schools to display the heritage material (as has been accomplished in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith District).
