This publication is put out by the Council of Senior Citizens' Organizations of B.C. (C0SC0).

This article is important for two reasons, I believe:

* its effect on seniors in B.C.
* a call to action should one find oneself, or one's loved one, in this situation.

I hope that you will take the time to read it, think about its implications and decide what you want to do about it.

Wishing you very good health and enjoyment of our leisurely years!
Valerie Dyer
Valerie Dyer,
President, PQRTA 2010-11
--------------------------
A tax by any other name

In May, THE PROVINCIAL GOVERMENT instructed its Regional Health Authorities to commence charging a new fee to individuals who are recovering in hospital and not yet well enough to go home.

Fraser, Interior and Northern Health Authroities were the first to roll out the new user fees.

Patients in Vancouver, admitted to the UBC Transitional Care Unit, will also begin receiving a bill for the $29.40 daily rate for "convalescent care."

The government has attempted to soften the blow for some by saying that those unable to pay may apply for hardshop waiver. It's an indignity that seniors should not have to experience.

The government is pursuing a course of action that is contrary to the Canada Health Act and returns health card back to a time prior to Medicare.

"These are health services that are needed by people still in the hospital, and they have alwasy been fully covered by MSP, our public health insurance plan in British Columbia which is funded by our tax dollars," says Melanie Leckovic, vice-predsident of the BC Nurses' Union.

"Therefore any attempt to charge our patients' fees for these medically-necessary services is completely unacceptable."

COSCO would certainly echo those remarks.

The BC Health Coaltition would be interested in hearing from any individual who has been charged the "convalescent fee", if they cannot afford to pay. They may be reached at 604-681-7945 or campaigner@bchealthcoalition.ca

What is needed is improvement in home support and home care, so that patients could reover in their own homes.

It costs less and saves lives.

(end of article)

PQRTA General Meeting - October 13th

Notice of PQRTA October General Meeting

Mark it on your calendar and plan to attend!

Date: Wednesday, October 13, 2010
Time: 11:30 to approximately 2:30 p.m.

Format of the afternoon:

· 11:50 to 12:00 p.m.: PQRTA welcome
· 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.: Lunch
· 1:00 - ~ 1:30 p.m.: PQRTA Membership Meeting
· 1:40 - ~ 2:30 p.m.: Guest Speaker

Place: Tidal Room at The Bayside in Parksville

Guest Speaker: Anne-marie Kanester, retired Vernon teacher, will do a presentation of her 800km trek, from France into northern Spain, along the Camino de Santiago del Compostela. As indicated in the note below, the report will go to the 2010 BCTF Annual General Meeting in March (the BCRTA is allowed representation at the Pensions section, of the BCTF AGM, and a number of the BCRTA Executive and Committee members will be attending to give input on behalf of the BCRTA membership).

Wishing us all a happy pension outcome!

Valerie Dyer
PQRTA President (2009-10)

Pension Update

BCTF Pension Consultation Report, 2010

Many BCRTA members attended local meetings of the Pension Consultation process and many others went online to do the Inflation Adjustment Account (IAA) survey.
A reminder of the PQRTA Christmas Luncheon and General Meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 11:30 to 2:30 at Creek House Restaurant ( French Creek Marina on Lee Road ).

Just a quick reminder that we will again be collecting items for the Salvation Army Food Bank at our Christmas Social on December 1st. All of the items collected stay in the area to help needy families in Parksville/Qualicum and vicinity. The recent news headlines that 25% of BC's children are victims of poverty is of particular concern to teachers; one small thing we can do to help is provide non-perishable food items that children will enjoy:
canned fruits; juice; individual pkgs of hot cereals; peanut butter; hot chocolate mix; etc etc -- you'll have some favorite items in mind. Thank you for your generosity.
Also, I will have all the RTA photo albums at the Social; you might like to look through them. Incidentally, the position of Club Photographer/Historian has been vacant since our year-end June BBQ. It is planned that the commission will have a gender and geographical balance.

Strategic planning and analysis is essential to any organization, and this commission will provide the means for logical growth and development.

Sincerely,

Douglas Edgar
1st Vice President

Enc.: Application Form

Volunteer Opportunities

Greetings, Colleagues in Retirement!

I trust that the month of September has been a pleasant one for you as we wend our way down to shorter daylight hours and lessening visitors with the beginning of the school year.

Please find attached, two documents from Doug Edgar, 1st Vice-President of the BCRTA, for your interest and possible involvement. The BCRTA is constructing a Review Committee to review its organizational structure and of course, as a consequence, to see how the BCRTA can better meet the needs of its membership. The Review Committee will consist of 7 BCRTA members who will serve for two years. Please give some thought as to whether or not serving on the Review Committee would be something that would interest you.

Just a reminder:
The PQRTA is still in need of a Historian Chairperson and a Programme Chairperson. Please contact me at 250.752.8824 or tvdyer@shaw.ca if you would like to help the PQRTA out with either of these positions. Your help would be most appreciated by your Executive and your fellow members.

As always, your PQRTA Executive realizes that there is no lack of volunteer opportunities available for retirees and that most PQRTA members are hard working volunteers for a number of worthwhile projects. For your involvement in whatever volunteer activity interests you, the PQRTA is most grateful for your contribution to helping make things better.

Wishing you all a lovely Indian Summer!

Valerie Dyer,
2009-10 PQRTA President

PQRTA Meeting Notice - October 20

Notice of PQRTA October General Meeting

Mark it on your calendar and plan to attend!

Date: Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Time: 12:30 to 4:00 p.m.

Format of the afternoon:
· 1:00 to 1:40 p.m.: PQRTA meeting
· 1:40 to 2:00 p.m.: Break
· 2:00 - ~ 4:00 p.m.: Presentation by Corp.
